You will get Omega-3 from vegetables like soybeans and spinach; however fish and other seafood contain higher amount of Omega-3. That is why doctors prescribe fish oil during pregnancy. If you are not fond of eating fish, it is advised that you take Omega-3 supplements. It is recommended that you include seafood in your regular diet than taking the supplements. In that way, you get other nutrients also along with the Omega-3. You can always take supplements, but studies have shown that when compared to the seafood, supplements do not help much.

What is DHA?

Omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic or DHA (which is one of the most important nutrients needed during pregnancy) plays a major role in the early stage development of the newborn. You need 200 milligrams of DHA every day for the brain and eye development of your baby during pregnancy. This is abundant in seafood especially salmons, sardines, tuna and cod fish. When you take supplements, most of these contain fish oil from any of these species. You will get cod liver oil also as a supplement but before taking that consult with your doctor because sometimes the fish oil extracted from the liver may contain mercury which is not good for the baby.

Good to know information: Fish oil contains another component which is known as EPA

(Eicosapentaenoic acid) which is also an Omega-3 fatty acid like DHA. Just like Omega-3 there is another fatty acid which is called Omega-6 and if the ratio of these two are not in balance it will cause chronic illness like Asthma, Cancer, heart diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. The fish oil is even considered as a standalone therapy for cancer and other diseases. Some of the other benefits of fish oil are inflammation reduction, cancer prevention, glowing skin, heart health, and gut health. Fish oil helps to reduce infertility and also helps in weight loss. In one sentence fish oil is an essential fat which is inevitable for the growth of a baby before and after birth.

Researches have proven that babies of expectant mothers who took high dose of fish oil during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy had better brain development. Even after the birth of the baby doctor may suggest you to take supplements for Omega-3 for the early stage development of the child.

Well, above you saw the benefits of fish oil during pregnancy but remember it is always better to add seafood rich in Omega-3 in your diet than taking supplements for it.
