There seem to be some controversy regarding whether pregnant woman should go for ultrasounds. Every pregnant woman should go for an ultrasound. Obstetric ultrasound is undertaken where sound waves are used for visualizing and determining the condition of a pregnant woman and her embryo.
Ultrasound detects the presence of living embryo or fetus. Ultrasound helps in diagnosing any congenital abnormalities which might develop in the developing fetus or embryo. It is also undertaken for multiple or twin pregnancies.
It is done for determining the size, location and possible abnormalities of the placenta. It helps in determining the age and size of the fetus. Determining the size of the fetus becomes necessary when preterm delivery is being contemplated or when the delivery is late.
It helps in determining the position of the placenta and fetus before the corionic villus sampling or amniocentesis. It can help in determining the condition of the fetus if no heartbeat is detected by the 14th week or if there has been no fetal movement by the 22nd week.
It also helps in detecting cervical changes which might predict preterm labor. An ultrasound improves the chances of a woman delivering a healthy baby.
